Showing Hidden Files On MacA quick guide to toggle the visibility of hidden files on your Mac.

The following guide has been tested and confirmed to be working on Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks.


Show Hidden Files

Open the Terminal application Applications > Utilities > Terminal and from the CLI prompt enter the following command:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE && killall Finder;

To confirm that your hidden files are now showing up properly, open up the finder and navigate to your Macintosh HD drive. You should see files/folders which are semi-transparent (these were previously hidden).

.DS_Store and .Trashes are examples of hidden files/folders:


Reverting Changes

If you want to revert this change, then from the CLI prompt enter the following command:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE && killall Finder;
